“Memories of Malcolm...”

Porus Cooper’s letter ("Memories of Malcolm Baug,” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, October 21-November 6, 2023)” about his father’s years of service in the British colonial Royal Indian Navy during World War II (WWII) was interesting. The stone monuments near Buckingham Palace in London mention the contribution to WWII (in human lives) of the troops from the Commonwealth. After the War, Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, WWII commander of the Indian Army, said that but for the support of the Indian Army, it would not have been possible for Britain to win the war. Interestingly, Auchinleck is a beautiful village in Scotland’s Highlands which I had visited in June 1962 along with two co-students from Bristol.          B. T. DASTUR dasturbehram@gmail.com ...

Thank you, Behram, for adding this facet to the story of wartime service by Indians, a story that for a variety of reasons is seldom told and scant remembered. If and when I next visit London I will be sure to look up the monuments near Buckingham Palace that you mention. I did long ago visit the Imperial War Museum in England and my recollection is that there was nothing memorable on display there pertaining to the contributions of Indian troops.
