Eight teams competed in the eighth edition of the Jimmy Muglai volleyball tournament organized by the Parsee Youth League of Ahmedabad (PYLA). Super Six, captained by Bomi Sethna lifted the Cup at the floodlit tournament that started on April 27 and continued beyond 2 a.m. on April 28, 2019. The Cup was presented by Freddy Muglai, captain of the semi finalist Sanatorium team and son of the late Jimmy Muglai, according to a write-up by volley ball enthusiast Hoshedar Daboo. Whilst Jimmy was a legendary bodybuilder and seven times winner of the Mr Gujarat title, his sons Freddy and Burzis are very good volleyball players.
The eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Each team played against the three others in their group and the top two teams from each group advanced to the semis. Super Six topped Group A with three wins while Legends 1 topped Group B with a similar record. Khamasa and Sanatorium were the other semifinalists. Super Six, the defending champions, defeated last year’s runners up Khamasa in straight sets while Legends 1 beat Sanatorium in a very close match. In the finals, Super Six easily defeated Legends 1 in straight sets.
Sheroy Daruwala from the winning team won the Best Player of the tournament while Harseed Kavina, Zeus Khambatta and Hooshand Gandhi were declared the Most Promising Youngsters. All prizes were sponsored by PYLA, its president being
Cyrus Daruwala. Two past legends of the Khanpur team, Noshir Karkaria and Kersi Manager, who had participated in many PYLA volleyball and cricket matches in the ’70s and ’80s were recognized with Lifetime Achievement awards. The team members as also spectators who had come to witness the tournament at the Parsi Sanatorium grounds on the banks of the river Sabarmati were served snacks by PYLA.
