This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of the last month of 2014.
Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of December. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from one south Bombay hospital that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 24.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 36 years, averaging at 30 years.
This times major killer was pneumonia/lung disease taking the lives of five Zoroastrians. Four patients each fell prey to heart disease (of which one was over 80 years), cancer and brain disease. Multi organ failure, kidney failure, liver disease, old age/general debility, hypothyroidism and motor neuron disease felled one victim each. A vehicular accident took the life of one Zoroastrian, whereas another one was murdered. The eldest and youngest to succumb were both females: at 92 and 44 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for December 1-15 in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
