You had earlier urged readers to do something tangible and meaningful to ameliorate the lot of our priests and pallbearers and had published the findings of an independent survey carried out by me, with the help of anjumans and punchayets (only five out of 15 cared to reply!).
There is a need to eliminate the system of pallbearers. I had suggested, through your columns, that Parsi businessmen and professionals and all Parsis who are willing to do so can set aside just 25 paise out of every Rs 100 they earn for our priests, chasniwallas and pallbearers (before they are phased out).
We have neglected our priests for too long. Unless we save our priests, our religion, fire temples, the two athornan institutes and our dakhmas are in grave danger. B. T. DASTUR
