It was the summer of 1950. A slim young girl recently passed out of St Xavier’s College clutched her inter-science certificate closely in her hands as she gazed at the Institute in front of her. She was excited at the thought of entering the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (VJTI), Bombay to pursue a career in engineering. No female student had ever entered the hallowed portals of the male dominated Institute. But there was a hitch.
