Election for seven

An election for seven trustees to the Bombay Parsi Punchayet has been agreed to by all the trustees.

"Mrs. Armaity Tirandaz, Mr. Viraf Mehta, Mr. Xerxes Dastur, Mr. Noshir Dadrawala and Mr. Kersi Randeria shall abide by the election schedule which will be set by the Hon'ble Division Bench of this Hon'ble Court for holding elections to fill the vacancy of seven Trustees." The decision follows a meeting in Justice Kathawalla's chamber today morning. He and Justice Milind Jadhav were hearing an appeal in a tussle between the two factions of the BPP trustees over when the long overdue trusteeship elections could be held.

As the meeting was held in the Judge's chambers neither the trustees nor the Press were present.

The statement goes on to state that the trustees "agree and confirm that each of their term of office shall expire on the date the new Trustees assume office after holding of elections as per the schedule fixed by this Hon'ble Court as set out above, notwithstanding that their term of office as a trustee may otherwise have been scheduled to go on till a later date. The parties agree and undertake to hold elections as per the schedule to be fixed by this Hon'ble Court and the same shall not be cancelled, save and except for elections not being permissible as per the Standard Operating Procedures as issued by the concerned authority / State Government."

The election could take place before mid-2022. Proposals for electoral reforms/amendments will also be put before the Court for approval.

Public notices will be issued "in the Jam-e Jamshed newspaper and Mumbai Samachar newspaper on January 16, 2022 calling for objections from concerned members of the Parsi Irani community, if any, to the proposed Scheme of Elections."
